Buying computer items/hardware

I know that everyone uses slickdeals but I wouldn't just chose the top-rated ratings even if you wanna buy and save your money. I can kinda notice that slickdeals, even though they're usually cheaper items, the forum posters for some of the computer stuff and the voters of the ratings can be no different than the general public, who know hardly  know enough of the computer stuff. Not only that, but what you want is usually different. It's always better to ask your friends about it if you're confused :). I want to buy a cheap, thin laptop but that's probably not gonna happen, I haven't seen any of those on newegg.

CS College Post-Undergrad Suggestions

So if anyone's reading this and doesn't know me at all. Here's what I am: a computer science & engineering undergrad (forget the engineering part, i didnt learn shit from it and i didnt like it) whose plan is to work in the future and see if I find any interest in certain topics for comp sci. If I don't, I was gonna shoot for an MBA in the future because my dad is himself a business man and I feel like I wouldn't be too bad in business but I don't know that either.

In short, I didn't do comp sci until end of high school and then college I randomly chose the major cuz I thought it was kind of fun and not too bad in high school. I ended up getting owned in college because the classes were so difficult and then when I started searching for jobs, it was so stressful because all the job fair people would expect you to have personal projects and experience. That's impossible for people like me who just started computer science. A lot of us have no time outside the classroom and some of us ended up failing the classes. I actually did pretty good but again, I was wondering about how to even find jobs or internships.

It turns out, it's not too hard. Just read up comp sci, google the stuff they expect you to know for some  interviews and practice reading. But if you were like me, there's no way we'd end up passing those companies who expect several interviews because I think those companies are searching for really smart people. Luckily, I ended up at SCE this summer and learned some useful programming stuff and about how shitty I still am.

In any case, my point is if you're worried, don't worry and just read up on the stuff I mentioned earlier. You'll definitely find a job somewhere. And if you wanna try working on something, I would avoid something like android apps, those honestly require a lot of time and you should be able to be good at programming (specifically OOP) before you even start on those, which I'm not. I've read several blogs and posts about what I should've been doing as a student to find internships or jobs in the future and a lot of it told me to try to work on stuff on my own but again, I have to mention that THAT itself is difficult even if you try. It's faster if you have other people to work with you or you start working in a company or something. A lot of the college classes taught me some stuff but for the most part, I would say it was a big waste of time but that's just the way our world or at least the US is set up to do right now.

Not sure if I mentioned enough useful stuff. Hopefully I did. Meh, no one reads my blogs anyways. It's cool. lol.

Why I don't Use Apple and Who Should?

There's a reason I haven't bought apple in the past few years. I don't need to. I play (or used to play) a lot of games and I like opening any programs I need. I can do almost everything on my PC. I know the benefits to Mac of being more user-friendly, security, etc.

So reasons not to use?
I don't need the user-friendly part because I already know how to use computers, I've been using them since I was 6-7 years old and obviously, it was in PC form (I did own the old 1998 or something apples but that was just plain DOS). I don't need the security because I hardly download unsafe stuff, antivirus is decent now, and my password is much safer than probably 90% of the world (I don't know why, I use longer complicated passwords) so I stay away from the hackers that exist anyways. PCs are much cheaper and the hardware used for PCs are also much cheaper in the first place, so there's no reason to switch to Mac. And if you have application problems, I run to open source for most of the things I'm looking for, it's not like everything's purely Mac-devoted.

So who should use them?
The older generation people need or at least want to use macs if they want easier usage and less stress on the computer.

Windows vs Linux again
Windows have solved a lot of their problems but the user interface is still pretty stupid. You have these really unorganized set folders and you can wonder why you have like 2 different things in the start menu shortcut and a shitload of folders with random files you don't even plan to open when it used to just be program install and uninstall. And the shortcuts on the task bar for windows? That came from Linux. I noticed how much nicer and simpler Linux was. Once again, if you already know how to use a computer and you don't need to play games, I would stick with Linux. You're gonna never have crashes, you're gonna have much cleaner installs and uninstalls and it's not gonna take that much RAM. Windows forces you to run all this useless shit on startup and you have to fix that with msconfig over and over. You also have regedit to fix certain parts of programs which Linux providers/developers have already fixed. Regedit also has random folders that just stay on there and windows for some reason, all the extra bullshit it keeps, has no simple program just to clean it all up. Instead, if you used computers like I did back about 8 years ago or so, you have all these programs that people suggested you try out and other stuff that would just risk losing money or causing viruses.

So yeah, older generation people and anyone who doesn't know how to properly use a computer, maybe completely new users I would start with the Mac. Certain workplaces require a focus on the mac, obviously you need your work for money so do it on the mac.

Who in Work Uses the Mac
I mention this because I asked my sister, who is a graphics designer, why designers use the mac. That's exactly why she got one. After reading this, I understand part of where my sister gained all her arrogant prickness, from the designers in NEW YORK. Designers is part of it, new york is also part of it. Just give this a quick read if you want: http://www.elated.com/articles/why-do-designers-use-macs/. The author of the blog wrote it himself and he is a designer: "We can be vain and somewhat shallow." My sister is ridiculously like that and that's why I find her so annoying half the time especially on my disagreement to that. But in any case, I think the article has made a good point. Apple, despite being expensive, has sold itself to the people with not just more money, it's made itself look very high quality and I guess that's why a lot of workplaces have chosen them instead of PCs even though PCs honestly wouldn't have the problem. But like I mentioned before, you need macs for people who don't use computers well and outside the computer science and engineering majors, that takes up a lot of people. It's harder for me to see from my perspective since I'm a computer science major. Better to ask the other guys who have either few computer skills or hardly used a PC in their life.

use Ubuntu Linux or Windows?

So for some reason I had issues with linux thinking it was too difficult when I took it back in college and learned it for the first time. I mean, honestly, the only reason I didn't use it because of lack of game support. I haven't looked it up now but maybe more games are supported on it, probably not yet cuz it's open source.

But unless you either want to play the popular and high quality games all the time OR you're as stupid as your mom/dad not knowing how to use computers, just switch to linux. It's a lot cleaner, completely less laggy, and faster to use. It was so confusing back in college cuz I never used it before. It's a really different thought process especially when you've used windows your entire life, you just don't wanna switch from it, especially as a college student (slight kid stage i guess, iono).

Again, games is the only shit that even matters to stay on windows. As for MAC, I've never used so I have no comments.

Your Best Media Player

So I mentioned Songbird the other day. The problem with this one open-source software is probably there's not enough people using it. It's got a lot better mac support but website-wise, the version-matching and add-on software is a little messed up. And there's some issue with the searching code. Main reason I used it was because I wanted to sort my folders like I mentioned before.

And I also checked out Spotify. Forget ITunes, this one's amazing. But it's still quite new so it doesn't have stuff like various languages (I think). Apparently, there's some update for better software but I have no idea. It lets you stream music from a bunch of your friends whatever they have on their own computer, transfer music to your ipod, and stream really good music. Online, there is some pretty good similar artist search on Spotify.

Heh, for similar artists, I used to go to last.fm all the time. I might actually go search for better ones because what I did started up like many years ago. Man, I really never checked all this stuff out while I was in college. But now that I have free time, I can see all this new stuff, software, and learn more about it.

Reason for this blog I just made

I really have no idea why I posted this blog in the first place. It's probably because of my head injury and I know I can practically do nothing I used to or enjoy it for a few months. But I can say, after my head injury, I've been learning a lot of old knowledge about my computer stuff and just making my computer a better, more convenient piece of work that people would never hope to stop using.

So there ya go, read up if you want. If you don't want, that's cool too.

Songbird, your mp3 software

Why use songbird? Cuz Itunes is one messed up little bitch that can't organize your folders and files and naming even when you download and rename. Songbird is extremely organized but it could use some more windows programmers. But I still love it even on windows. I renamed everything so when I do what I want which is mainly playing it on my computer or my car, I can be really comfortable about it.

There's also additional add-ons on songbird that people would love. Some people like me wanna play guitar tabs from the songs we know. Songbird has that. Others wanna know the lyrics and just sing with it. Songbird also has that. Another thing I love to do is to find similar artists from the good ones I found. SAME THING. Songbird has it all. Get that shit.
